Day 3 - Nipigon to Lake Superior Provincial Park - Thurs, June 20

Gassed up.  Left at 9:30  - 14 degrees, cold and foggy.  Too bad,  as we are starting Lake Superior route and won't see views as clearly...

Listening to Pink Floyd "Shine on you Crazy Diamond".   Perfect soundtrack for this part of foggy drive!

 Beautiful country!
1000 kms from the Ontario/Manitoba border

Hard to keep my eyes on the road!

Lots of red rock.   Cliffs on left, lake on right.   Stopped in Terrace Bay to see Aguasabon Gorge. Very dramatic waterfall!  From same parking lot we did a 2km bike ride down Cirques trail to Danny's Cove. (Part of Transcanada trail. )  More of a hiking trail, therefore took road back up.

 At Aguasabon Gorge

Left by 12:15.  Mostly clear now...
Stopped for lunch in Marathon- Pebble Beach overlooking Lake Superior. Gassed up - on our way by 2:12  - Heading to lake Superior Provincial Park.

After stopping a few times to admire view and walk on rock shelves and later on a beach , we arrived around 6:00 pm.  There has been lots of construction since the start of our trip and the Lake Superior route is hilly, so travel is fairly slow pulling our trailer.

Scenery has been beautiful yet it is much more dramatic the minute we hit this provincial park.   Lake Superior is the largest lake in the world and contains enough water to cover all of North America in 1 1/2 meters of water!!  So impressive!

We got a campsite pretty much on the shore so great view,  BUT - there are tons of mosquitoes so I am not going out. Robert gone for a quick bike ride.

Was going to turn in early but the sunset was irresistible so took a beach walk instead to admire the orange pink skies.  Well worth it!! Mosquitoes had lessened which made it so much more enjoyable.

 At our campsite...

Algae at the shoreline... it was everywhere.

Robert had opted to do a short ride to some pictographs instead, which were supposedly 1/2 km away. Turns out it was much farther away.  Since it was already past 9 when he left, there wasn't much  sun left in those dark forest trails.  He was on the Coastal trail,  which,  unbeknownst to him at the time became a challenging trail with large boulders. After hike-a-biking a ways, he realized he couldn't ride further and it was now getting dark and rather than go back through the dark forest with no headlamp -( can we say ill-prepared?) he chose to climb the boulders carrying his bike and bushwacked his way out to the road that he was sure was close by. Thankfully it was! Then it was an easy road ride back .

Note:  So happy we brought a full size queen mattress with us. (Robert's idea). So much more comfortable  to ensure a good night's sleep!!
