Day 23 - Cape Breton - Cheticamp/Skyline Trail - Wed, July 10

Another glorious day here on the island. Coffee time on the beach again!

Our walk down to the beach from the trailer...
going to the crowded beach.

Looking for a quiet spot on the beach... check this side...

This side?

So crowded at 10:30 AM!

Looking for rocks... again!

The rocks here were so unique and colourful!

Click here for 21 sec video of what we were told was is a baby eel.
He did make it back to water right after this video.

Cool striations in the rock.

Robert, picking rocks for the stonework on the pillars at the Fernie house...

Our little walk back up to the trailer... note trailer and Tacoma in background

We then left to do the Skyline Trail which is in the Highlands National Park.

The drive there of course was awesome!

Getting close to Cheticamp...

L'Eglise St- Pierre in Cheticamp

We stopped along the way in Chéticamp to see some rug hooking, which is famous in these parts. We enjoyed the demonstration and her acadian accent once again... Click here to watch 1 1/2 minute video.

We then biked the trail to be able to get to the best part: the boardwalk at the top.

Once we were at the furthest we could get into the loop trail, Robert told me that no bikes are allowed on this trail... He's such a rebel! We stashed our bikes in the bush and made our way there.

 Endless boardwalk to the Skyline!

 On and on!

Looks like it ends up in the sky above the ocean...

The Cabot Trail from above... Where this photo is taken from
is the spot where you see the hikers on the picture just below this one.

The Skyline Trail, taken from the road (Cabot Trail)... If you look
closely at the very highest point on the mountain, there are hikers
at approximately the same spot as where the previous photo was taken from.

 Awesome!

Note part of the Cabot Trail below...

 In awe at the view!

Et à l'arrivée, une bonne glace!
Actually, not a glace, but a blueberry scone from a great little bakery in Cheticamp.

This is a must see trail not to be missed if you ever come here! The pictures do not do it justice as it was a wee bit hazy, but will give you an idea at least... Doing the majority of the trail was actually a great idea. It would have been a very long walk through the woods. The best part of the trail only comes up after quite a bike ride! Click here for a 48 second video of the panorama from the top!

Robert was really wanting to ride down the highway back to the information centre at the park gates, so I followed in the truck. What a downhill! He figures he was doing at least 60-80 km/hr. He thinks this is fun!

This is one of the best sections of the Cabot Trail to ride!

A road ride, yes... But the views and speed totally made up for it!

 Meeting up with Suzie again...

Back at the campsite, we were invited to have a campfire with our awesome Cape Breton neighbours Eugene and Debbie Murphy. Lovely evening.

Sunset from our trailer...

  1. Ahhhh... What a trip! It looks like another country! So fun to be 'traveling' with you! Love the videos too. I know someone who would have a hayday knowing you ate at the Rankin's restaurant in the last post:) Very cool!
