Our plan was to relax for a day or so after all the driving, so we took it easy. Tried to find the advertised farmer's market to get some fresh veggies, but never found it. During our search, we ended up back at the main highway and realized that we had cell service, so Robert made a few phone calls and I did a few texts. We then worked our way back to the campsite doing a few short hikes along the way.

The power of life once again...
such a shallow root system for this fallen cedar.
The coolest spot was a lookout on a cliff with a see-through gridded cantilever at the end, where you could see way way down the cliff. From this viewpoint, you could also see the city of Thunder Bay. |
Suzie hanging off the edge!
We met a young guy named Jack, who had seen our bikes and had inquired where we had biked from, etc. After talking with him for a while, we found out that he had biked the Continental Divide trail from Montana to New Mexico, and he had just yesterday finished hiking/running the 70 km Lake Superior Coastal Trail in 2 1/2 days... A lightbulb appeared over Robert's head! Here was someone capable that he could bike with on a more demanding trail ride he was planning. So, after determining that he could fit on my bike, a time was set and they took off on their adventure. I was glad he was going riding with another person... always safety in numbers. They seemed like a very good match athletic wise and willingness-to-go-on-and-on wise. Because of that, they managed to bike and run a VERY special spot, on top of the sleeping giant!

The Sea Lion, a rock formation along the way...
Jack, in a really cool section of the trail... a very lush area that felt
like we were somewhere in a South American jungle...
Jack, admiring the scenery...
A mushroom that looked like a half lemon...
Getting up a little higher...

The impressive cliffs at the Gorge! I took this lying down hanging over the cliff edge!
SOOO IMPRESSIVE!!! No words can describe...
Looking down approx 1000 feet straight down to Lake Superior!
Jack, in exhilaration mode, just as I was!
On the bike ride back... we actually made it back while it was still light...
we had our doubts that we would... we did have headlights in case.
They returned home at sunset, exhilarated. We had supper together with them recounting the ride/hike/run. We had a fun visit with Jack. Since he is living out of his Prius, traveling across Canada, he parked on our lot and spent the night there. |
I see you have found a replacement for me. Wow, he has done a lot. Those pictures are amazing.
